One of the pleasures of garden wildlife photography is never quite knowing who might make an appearance next. While sitting quietly with my camera ready, I was delighted when this beautiful Chaffinch stopped by for a visit, providing a wonderful opportunity to capture a series of intimate portraits.
What struck me most was how calm and focused the bird appeared as it balanced on the edge of the feeding dish. The soft afternoon light highlighted the subtle colours in its plumage, from the warm buff tones across the breast to the distinctive white markings on the wings. Against the smooth green background, those details became even more striking.
The series captures a few different moments from the visit. In one frame, the Chaffinch pauses to survey its surroundings, alert but relaxed. In another, it lowers its head towards the food, completely absorbed in the task at hand. My favourite photograph may be the one where tiny particles can be seen drifting from the bird’s beak, a fleeting moment that lasted only a fraction of a second but adds a sense of movement and life to the photograph.
Wildlife photography often reminds me that extraordinary moments can be found close to home. There is no need to travel great distances when nature regularly offers these opportunities right outside the back door. A simple garden feeding station can become a stage for fascinating behaviour and beautiful encounters.
Chaffinches are among the UK’s most familiar garden birds. Each visit feels unique, and every photograph helps tell a different story. This particular encounter was a reminder of the beauty that exists in everyday moments, if we take the time to pause and observe.
I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I enjoyed capturing it.
Which photograph is your favourite from the series? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
